At the September 28th Town Council meeting Joshua Weimer, representing District 2, resigned his position.  Josh is moving out of the incorporated Town and is no longer eligible to hold the office of Town Council.  Josh was in his second term and has served the Town in this position since 2018.

To the Town of Shipshewana,

I am submitting my resignation as Town Council representative for District 2 of the Town of Shipshewana effective end of this day September 28, 2023. I will be moving outside of Shipshewana Town Corporation limits soon and will be unable to represent the residence of District 2. I would like to thank the community for their continued support in the many changes we’ve made during my 5 years of service. Indiana town council members serve as both the executive and legislative branches for small communities incorporated as towns within the state. The Shipshewnaa Town Coucnil consists of five members, bassed upon the town's population.  Council members are elected and they serve a four-year term.  There are no state term limits affecting how many times a candidate may run for re-election to office.  Unlike some states, Indiana councilmembers must declare a political party affiliation, if any, when they file to run for office.

Indiana town councils work in conjunction with an elected town clerk, who manages the day-to-day business of the municipal government.  In addition to a clerk, the council can authorize the hiring of other staff to run the operations of government, including law enforcement officers, utility workers, park and recreation employees and town managers. These employees serve at the pleasure of the council.

A Council Member plays a vital role in shaping the future of our town.   According to Indiana Code 36-5-2-9, the Powers of the legislative body include:  (Visit https://iga.in.gov/laws/2023/ic/titles/36#36-5 for more info.)

  1. Adopting Ordinances and Resolutions: Council members have the authority to create and pass ordinances and resolutions that govern various aspects of the town's operations and functions.
  2. Property Management: They can purchase, hold, and convey property interests on behalf of the town, ensuring that resources are used effectively for the benefit of the community.
  3. Common Seal: Council members also have the responsibility to adopt and use a common seal, which represents the town's official identity.
